Letter to an MTC Friend

If I would have had to answer your question of ‘settling in’ two weeks ago, I would not know how to answer honestly. Now, on our third (Friday will be four) week here, we are doing great!

I think jet lag affected me more than just sleep patterns. I was struggling to know not only why I was here, but why do I feel that way? One morning I was having a really tough time, I knelt down to pray again for help and strength, and Father answered my prayer so powerfully, as I heard, “Fear not, I am with thee, oh be not dismayed, For I am thy God and will still give thee aid.” They hymn caught hold and I continued, "I’ll strengthen thee, help thee, and cause thee to stand, uphill by my righteous omnipotent hand.” Of course He will, He promised me and is fulfilling His promise! That moment was life-changing!!!

So yes, we have settled in! Elder and Sister Hancock have been a HUGE help to us!

Last week we were in Riga, Latvia, for a five day Seminary and Institute Conference. It was wonderful! I consider it a huge blessing to have so much training (including that which came from our zone conference with Pres. Martino) at the beginning of our mission here. It had been 5 years since they had had a conference like that.

We flew back to Saratov Friday night. Our Stake President had asked us to come straight to the Church Office. Once there he helped to take care of our passport ‘stuff.’ I joined the YSAs in the other room, in the middle of their game night. The Spirit was so strong in that gathering, it bore witness to me that I was exactly where I was supposed to be. I have not been the same since!

Last night as part of Institute, we had a ‘General Conference Kick-off activity. Our desire was to get the youth and YSAs excited about upcoming Gen. Conference. We worked alongside the young volunteers, handing out small flyers at church, and having the active members use social media to invite. We had 12 YSAs show up, more than have attended since we have been here. We watched the Mutual ‘Ask’ video and had them do just what they did in the video, write down their concerns, questions, doubts, etc. We will ponder and pray about them and look for answers in the messages in General Conference. We will follow up after we’ve had some time to receive all of conference.

So, I am very happy! The language remains a struggle, but I’m not worried about it. We are grateful to be a part of Father’s work here in this part of His vineyard.

I look forward to seeing you in April, along with the whole mission. What a treat!!!  We are working on ideas to get the whole stake excited about, and ready to hear the words of an Apostle of God, Elder Holland.

I remain grateful for the comfort it was to travel here with you, I can’t imagine doing that by ourselves.

Missionarily yours,
  Kath Bowler
